about

Hazama is the second album from Berlin-based group Mitsune. Filled with uplifting group vocals, driving beats and basslines from their new rhythm section, and an exciting range of instruments including shinobue, ney, qanun, koto and the Tsugaru shamisen (3-stringed Japanese folk instrument), Mitsune immerses you with intricate sounds and beautiful melodies & harmonies to match.

The word ‘Hazama’ translates roughly from Japanese as ‘in between’, describing the feeling of being in limbo, caught between worlds. This album is an exploration of Mitsune's experiences as a cross-cultural group living in ‘cultural limbo’. All of the band members come from very different backgrounds – Japan, Germany, Australia, Greece – and are dealing with issues such as mixed-race heritage, speaking a mixture of languages, expatriate life and its accompanying sense of displacement/otherness. This constant feeling of in-between-ness is both challenging and beautiful. The band wanted to capture the essence of this feeling, leaning into the beauty it can create, and having fun with it.
